Reflections of Solace

  Reflections of Solace

The rain tapped gently against the windowpane, a rhythm soft and steady, like the echoes of a memory that refused to fade. Amelia sat alone in her small apartment, wrapped in a blanket that could not quite reach the chill within her chest. The quiet was heavy. All around her were things that once had meaning: the book they read together, the plant he gave her on their anniversary, the sweater that still smelled faintly of him.

He was her first love. The kind that made the world feel brand new, like every sunrise was just for them. And when he left—when the relationship ended without the kind of closure she had always imagined—it felt like the sun had stopped rising altogether.

That night, unable to sleep, Amelia wandered into the bathroom. She flipped on the light and stared into the mirror. The woman staring back looked like her but didn’t feel like her. Her eyes were ringed with red from crying, her lips downturned in quiet sorrow. She touched the cold surface of the glass with her fingertips, as if trying to reach through it and comfort the broken version of herself on the other side.

“Who are you now?” she whispered, her voice cracking.

Tears welled up again, not from the memory of him this time, but from the ache of not knowing how to move forward. She didn’t want to forget him. But she also didn’t want to live inside the absence he had left behind.

She turned off the light, stepped back into the stillness of her room, and sat by the window. The rain had stopped. Streetlights glowed on wet pavement, casting reflections that shimmered like soft pastel paintings. For a moment, she closed her eyes and imagined herself walking down one of those quiet streets—not to escape, but to arrive somewhere new.

In that silent moment, something inside her shifted—not a miracle, not a full healing, but the faintest breath of peace.

Maybe, she thought, moving on wasn’t about forgetting him, or pretending it never mattered. Maybe it was about learning to carry the memory without letting it weigh her down.

The next morning, Amelia got up early. She combed her hair, washed her face, and smiled softly at her reflection. The sadness was still there, but it no longer defined her. It was part of her story—but not the end.

She took a deep breath, opened the door, and stepped into a new day.

"Mirror After Rain"

In the hush of night, the silence speaks,
Through hollow walls and tear-stained cheeks.
A heart once bright, now worn and torn,
Still lingers where love once was born.

She stands before the silver glass,
A ghost of joy from seasons past.
Eyes like dusk, too tired to shine,
Tracing shadows on the lines of time.

Her fingers graze the mirror's face,
Seeking warmth in its cold embrace.
A silent plea in her reflection,
For peace, for light, for new direction.

Love once bloomed, a fire, a flame,
Now ashes whispering his name.
But from the ruin, soft winds rise,
And hope is written in the skies.

She watches rain on cobblestones,
The world still turning, all alone.
Yet in the glass, she sees anew—
A girl not lost, but passing through.

The pain remains, yet she can breathe,
And find the strength to softly leave.
Not him, not love, but all the ache—
She sheds it like the dawn breaks.

She walks where light and raindrops blend,
Each step a start, not just an end.
The mirror quiet, the sorrow gone,
She meets herself—and carries on.

[Verse]

The rain falls soft on the windowpane

It whispers low like a sad refrain

Her eyes meet hers in the mirror’s glass

A face once bright now shadowed past

[Chorus]

Oh mirror tell me who I am

The tears have carved what love began

Though broken now I’ll stand once more

A heart will mend though bruised and sore

[Verse 2]

Each droplet sings a sorrowed tune

The clouds conceal the silver moon

She lifts her hand to touch her face

A fragile girl in a hollow space

[Chorus]

Oh mirror tell me who I am

The tears have carved what love began

Though broken now I’ll stand once more

A heart will mend though bruised and sore

[Bridge]

The rain will fade the storm will cease

And with the dawn there comes release

Her gaze grows firm her breath is deep

A promise made a soul to keep

[Chorus]

Oh mirror tell me who I am

The tears have carved what love began

Though broken now I’ll stand once more

A heart will mend though bruised and sore

[Verse]
A man walks the streets of this old UK town
His head shines bright as the sun goes down
With his loyal dog
A shepherd so proud
They wander together through the bustling crowd

[Verse 2]
The cobbled stones echo beneath his feet
History whispers from every street
The buildings tell tales of days long gone
Yet the future glimmers as they move along

[Chorus]
Oh the world keeps changing but some things stay
A man and his dog on a quiet pathway
Through the beauty of life and the cities' hum
They find their peace as the twilight comes

[Verse 3]
Shop windows shimmer with modern delight
The glow of neon cuts through the night
But the man sees charm in the cracks and the wear
For the soul of the city is still beating there

[Bridge]
The German shepherd pulls
Eager to roam
In this city of strangers
They’ve made it home
Together they stride through the shifting scene
Finding joy in the small and the in-between

[Chorus]
Oh the world keeps changing but some things stay
A man and his dog on a quiet pathway
Through the beauty of life and the cities' hum
They find their peace as the twilight comes

The New Generation in Britannia

The New Generation in Britannia

This poem is my first impression when I first arrived in the UK in 2008. Reading it again now, it still feels fresh and real...……

The evolution of hair grows more eccentric:
Men let it flow long; women shave it clean.

Fashion gets thriftier by the day:
A tee no longer hides the belly,
A skirt barely meets the seat.

The gadgets are sleek and swift:
Left hand grips a laptop,
Right taps an iPhone screen.

Behaviors of the young unravel fast—
Binge drinking rises, boys and girls alike.

Even language grows lighter:
"Thanks" becomes "Ta",
"Goodbye" just "Tata".

And the ego?
It blossoms.
As long as I like it—
Anything goes.

Postscript:

In the past, Britain was made up of four ethnic groups, such as the English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh.

However, due to the changing times, Britain today is a country that can accept different ethnic backgrounds, such as Africans, Far East Asians, Middle East Asians, and so on. For this reason, you can see a mixed culture here. Each race has its own way of dressing, so it may be a bit difficult to really keep up with the fashion.

The British have a very creative mind. They like to make their own clothes and hairstyles, and then create their own style. Of course, saving money may be one of the reasons, but you can't deny their handmade creativity.

I like products made in Britain. You can see their skills and care from their products. I wrote this poem in 2008. Since I just came here and didn't know much about British culture, I was actually a little surprised by what I saw, but now I'm used to it. I began to feel that I gradually liked their culture.

Eccentric Evolution

[Verse]
Hair flows wild like a river’s bend
Men let it grow with no end
Women shave it clean and bare
Fashion’s flipping
They don’t care

[Chorus]
Skirts that barely meet the seat
Tees that wave above the heat
Thrifted trends that make a scene
Eccentric lives in every gene

[Verse 2]
Gadgets buzzing
Lights that gleam
Dreams are coded in a machine
Pockets vanish
Hands hold air
Life’s a show
So strip it bare

[Chorus]
Skirts that barely meet the seat
Tees that wave above the heat
Thrifted trends that make a scene
Eccentric lives in every gene

[Bridge]
Time keeps spinning
Rules undone
What was strange is now the fun
Hair and threads
A tale they weave
Every moment
We believe

[Chorus]
Skirts that barely meet the seat
Tees that wave above the heat
Thrifted trends that make a scene
Eccentric lives in every gene

Heart of the Sea

At the deepest part of the deep blue ocean, there is a legendary bay, which is called "Ningyue Abyss" by ancient creatures. This place has never been discovered by humans, nor is it disturbed by time. The four seasons are like a dream, and everything is quiet.

Yueshan is a young mermaid who protects the ocean. She is born with the ability to listen to the language of shells and communicate with sea beasts. On this day, she heard a faint sound of light coming from the depths of the seabed in the distance, and a thousand-year-old pearl was about to wake up.

She swam gently through the colorful coral forest and glided through the quietly waiting fish. Her dolphin companions accompanied her leisurely, guarding her quiet but firm progress. When she finally arrived in front of the giant clam surrounded by seaweed, the pearl was shining with a faint moonlight.

This is not an ordinary pearl, but the "Heart of the Sea" - it is said that it can help lost souls find their home and awaken dormant hope again. Yueshan gently held it up, closed her eyes, and heard the whisper of the ancient goddess in her ears: "May you guide the sea of light with a pure heart."

"Heart of the Sea"

Beneath the waves where silence sings,
She drifts with pearls and whispered wings.
A dolphin guards, the sea breathes low,
In her hands, the ocean’s glow.

 [Verse 1]
Beneath the waves where silence hums
She floats where golden sunlight drums
A crown of shells her head does keep
A throne of coral in the deep
[Chorus]
Oh heart of the sea you hold the night
A lantern beneath the waters bright
The tides they bow they kiss your feet
In your embrace the world’s heartbeat
[Verse 2]
A whisper runs through currents cold
Her voice a story ancient told
The seaweed dances round her hair
A queen of blue beyond compare
[Chorus]
Oh heart of the sea you hold the night
A lantern beneath the waters bright
The tides they bow they kiss your feet
In your embrace the world’s heartbeat
[Bridge]
The dolphins leap they guard her side
Through shadows deep where secrets hide
She wears the ocean's endless glow
A mystery only waves will know
[Chorus]
Oh heart of the sea you hold the night
A lantern beneath the waters bright
The tides they bow they kiss your feet
In your embrace the world’s heartbeat
