The Concept of Voice
When people speak out their opinion and beliefs, they make their voice. When people want to express their feelings, they make their voice. It shows that voice is opinions, beliefs and feelings.
Writing is a relationship between a writer and the page and is about establishing a writer relationship with himself. When a writer wants to put his opinion, beliefs and feelings into his writing, he needs to put his voice on the work. The voice is called writer’s voice. The writer’s voice can be defined as the writer’s awareness and effective use of certain factors, such as diction, tone syntax, unity, coherence and audience to set up a clear and distinct “personality of the writer”.
Writing is different from other school works such as Math, Social study and so on. At school, students study same things all over and over. Most of students will produce similar works; however, writing will need different result. If all the students write the same writing, it is chaotic. It could be copying, but writing. Each writer has his own unique personality and voice to express himself in order to attract plenty of readers to share his thought, beliefs, feeling and so on.
Nowadays, in the creative writing course, students are always encouraged to try different literary styles or techniques in order to help them find out or develop their voice. Most of people think that having big vocabulary and good grammar ability and a computer, then they can write. It is not right.
In my opinion, one of the most powerful tools as a writer is voice. The unique blend of description, character and style allows a writer to talk to the readers through the printed word. However, without a voice, a manuscript may have an exciting plot, interesting characters and a surprise ending, but it might not get published. The voice is to beckon the readers to curl up with a book and whisper, " Listen to me! I'm going to tell you a story." Besides that, voice varies with the individual writer having a strong voice is pondered positive and beneficial to the writer and his readers.
